If you haven’t had the chance to
hear Villy Vendetta then you have no idea what you’re missing. Simply put, his energy, perspective, unique
background, and dedication to making good music makes Villy someone to keep
your eyes on.
Born to parents from Sierra Leone
and Jamaica who brought the family to America when he was in the fourth grade,
he witnessed the drive in his immigrant parents to come to America seeking a
better opportunity. Reflecting on that
he says, “As a foreigner, you have to have a dream. You have to have a plan.” When asked what his plans are he responded
that he wants to be “bigger than life and give back to the community” also
adding that there are lots of things he sees that he doesn’t like at that he feels
“like the only time the powers that be give them any attention is when we heard
each other.” With that said, he said, “He
wants to use his platform to make a change. “ “I’m not a rapper, I’m a
motivational speaker. I bring that
violence to you face so that you can see what’s going on. It’s real out here. There’s people out here
starving” “Yeah, we party but there’s real things going on out there. “ He admits that some of his music can be
classified as “gangsta” but wants to make it clear that he doesn’t glorify
violence.
Some of his
influences include life, his people around him, Tupac, has Nelly in his deck,
Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, KRS ONE, Rakim, 90’s era music. old music saying
that he has a 90’s soul that you can hear in his music and that was the golden
era of rap. His style is a blend of the
best of the music from that day and today’s music. Says Villy, “The music right now is ok, but
there’s more that they can cover. Songs
should be more than partying and drinking.
There should be a message to them.
Real rap and real metaphors.” The
people who he does listen to today are JMG, NO SLEEP GANG, anyone who supports
him. He refused to mention anyone else
because “those same people will try to diss him.” That’s just the climate of hip hop.
So far, Villy has
enjoyed a great response at his live shows and through social media. According to Villly, “My live show response
has gone from “Oh to Wow.’ People are
checking for me a lot so that means something and they are re-posting my
videos.
